If you've ever seriously considered becoming the custodian of one of the most sublime automobiles ever realized but were concerned about condition or unknown maintenance history, then here is an opportunity.
This 1973 Citroen SM is offered for sale by owner #4. In excellent condition, it is a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration with 6000 miles on its reset odometer. It is the personal restoration project of SM World's Jerry Hathaway, and therefore, arguably, one of the finest SMs on the road.
The story picks up in the mid-1980's in Houston, Texas where the car's second owner, an oilman and collector of eclectic tastes, begins consulting long-distance with Mr. Hathaway to remediate a number of issues. As will happen with obsessive gear-heads, one thing leads to another, and the car makes its way to SM World's California shop. With 22k miles showing on its odometer, the car is completely dismantled. The body and undercoating are stripped revealing no rust or accident damage - lending credence to the veracity of its odometer reading.
